History of the Danish Gambling Authority
Founded in the year 2000 as a subsidiary of the Danish Ministry of Taxation, the Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) was charged with the controlling the more analogue gaming devices back then for around a decade. Mostly gaming machines that were found in small shops, and gambling arcades. And in addition to that, the DGA supervised terrestrial casinos in Denmark, and issued licenses for any gaming operations involving charity lotteries and bingos, marking the beginning of the rich Denmark gaming license history.
However, the Denmark gaming license history got even richer. At the turn of the decade, the DGA become more powerful as it issued licenses to everyone that operates gambling activities in Denmark and it’s jurisdiction. There are exceptions, however. One example being that Danske Lotteri Spil has a monopoly on lotteries so the DGA doesn’t provide licenses for that. Nevertheless, the Danish Gambling Authority or Spillemyndigheden as it is fondly called exerts an amazing sphere of control over gaming in Denmark. So it was no surprise when they became an independent body on the 1st of January 2013, with their own director.
In the years that followed the Gaming Authority moved its offices from Høje Taastrup to Copenhagen and finally moved the headquarters in 2016 to Odense. There are around 100 employees in the headquarters and lesser in other offices in Jutland and Copenhagen.
Benefits of Gaming at DGA Regulated Casinos
The essence of licensing and supervising casinos and all other forms of gambling in the jurisdiction of the DGA is primarily to give the player a safe and advantageous environment to enjoy gaming. Some of the ways they achieve this includes:
Fostering Responsible Gambling
The DGA does this by providing the players with a helpline which they can contact to get on the journey to aid in treating gambling addiction. This national helpline is known as “Stopspillet” was introduced on the 2nd of January 2020. There's also ROFUS which is the gaming authority's register of people who have excluded themselves from gambling temporarily or permanently.
Fighting Match-Fixing
is a common threat to faithful operators of games and players alike. They tend to exploit the efforts of players if not checked properly. The Danish gaming authority is well aware of this, and so to make sure that players are not exploited without their knowledge it is a serious matter on the agenda of the DGA. In liaison with several agencies that are anti-doping, anti-economic crimes, and several sports agencies in the country, the DGA manages to achieve this goal. The punter at a casino, live or online, or at any gambling company can be assured that he is actually playing a game of chance, and is not being swindled of any money.
Credibility and Accountability
On the well-built and highly detailed website of the Danish Gambling Authority, there are sections to contact the DGA to report any Denmark gaming authority complaints and the likes. There's also a “whistleblower” section for personnel under any casino or gambling operators that notice irregular activities to reach out to the DGA and expose said activities. Both the “contact” and “whistleblower” options offer anonymity to the person reporting an incident. Because of this, asides from the requirements needed to acquire a license in the first place, a player can be assured of receiving the proper services from a DGA licensed casino without being swindled or treated unfairly.
Casinos Regulated by the Danish Gambling Authority
All the casinos regulated and licensed by the Danish Gambling authority is available on their website. In the menu in the top left corner of the screen, under the “for the public” column, there is a column showing the list of gambling operators that have been issued a Denmark Gaming license. It is also downloadable as a pdf. There is also a search button that can be used to search if the casino, company, or operator is a licensee under the Danish Gambling Authority.
The Danish Gambling Authority is in collaboration with several organisations outside its shores, some of which include:
- The European Union (EU)
- The Gaming Regulators European Forum (GREF)
- The International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR)
- Collaborations with other Nordic countries
- Several bilateral collaborations with other countries like Malta, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Alderney, France, and Great Britain to help ensure the protection of gaming consumers.
Is Danish Gaming License Legit?
A Danish gaming license is a very respected document within the borders of Denmark, in the rest of the EU, and the world as a whole. What’s more, in Greenland, the DGA is also responsible for gambling supervision and licensing of gaming operations like online casinos, lotteries, and online and terrestrial betting.
All these are not just a testament to the power of the Danish Gambling license as an EU gambling license. It is also as proof that the Danish gaming license is a well-respected license all over the world, not just as an EU gaming license, or as a Danish gaming license.
However, any Denmark gaming authority complaints can be forwarded through the “contacts” section in their website
